For what it’s worth, this note from a friend of mine in Italy arrived in my inbox around the middle of May, 2003.
“You Americans truly amaze me!
In the 1960s, antiwar activists learned an important rule-of-thumb about what power does to your American political class. Put simply, the rule said this: “Whatever they tell you about others, do not believe it! Chances are it is just more opportunistic scapegoating intended to distract us from the truth! The terrible things they accuse others of doing, they themselves are doing, only worse!”
Unfortunately, in the intervening years your politicians certainly have not changed appreciably at all. If you still need to be reminded, I invite you to look at the record of who fronted for “Satanic Saddam” during the 1980s, and more importantly, how!
When it comes to fundamental truths, don’t you Americans care enough to want to know anything?”
What my friend was referring to, of course, was the on-going crime against humanity being carried out in our name during the 1980s by the Reagan-Bush administrations. You can read all about it here if you want to.
True, this is old news. On the other hand, using the same kind of demonization techniques that were applied against Saddam, we Americans are about to fail miserably once again by foisting another gratuitous crime against humanity upon the world…just for the hell of it.
Obviously, I am referring to the on-going demonization of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, and our stubborn resolve to destroy our Democratic Republic once and for all (yet again) by invading Iran without cause.
Question: why do we all seem to be using the Middle East to destroy ourselves as Americans? Why don’t we just go about it ourselves, and be done with it? Why drag it out? Why involve others? Why use a scapegoat? I don’t get it!
Interesting strategy! Not very original or courageous, but interesting!
As always, in democratic freedom and equal justice for all under the rule of law.
